Job summary

Exponent is seeking a Managing Engineer (Ph.D) in Chicago, IL to lead metallurgical and corrosion engineering initiatives. You will develop business, grow client opportunities, and guide a team in laboratory-based analyses using advanced characterization techniques.

The role requires a Ph.D. (Materials Science/Metallurgy or related), 5–10 years of experience, and PE licensure. Expect leadership, strong communication, and the ability to work across multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, or related discipline.
• 5–10 years of related professional experience.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE or P. Eng) in Metallurgical Engineering or related discipline.
• Specialized knowledge of operating a laboratory with materials characterization techniques (e.g., SEM, FIB, TEM, EDS, XPS, Auger, SIMS, FTIR, acoustic microscopy, X-ray).
• Litigation experience as a testifying expert is preferred but not required.
• Business development experience with a proven track record.
• The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in their field.
• Presently legally authorized to work in the US, no immigration sponsorship or visa processing required.

Responsibilities

• Identifying, developing, and securing new business opportunities.
• Significantly increasing Exponent's metallurgical and corrosion engineering consulting efforts, particularly in laboratory-based analysis.
• Analyzing a wide variety of safety, performance, and reliability issues related to metallurgical and corrosion engineering using field inspections, engineering analysis and experimental testing.
