Job summary

OpenAI is seeking a Manager, Applied AI Engineering (Codex) to lead a team driving Codex adoption across strategic accounts in our San Francisco office. The role blends hands-on design with people leadership, shaping scalable AI-enabled development patterns for customers.

You will collaborate with Sales, Product, Research, and Engineering to translate customer needs into practical AI solutions, define operating models, and ensure strong execution while promoting safe AI practices.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in deeply technical, customer-facing roles.
• 2+ years leading technical teams.
• Experience building or deploying generative AI, developer platforms, or cloud software solutions.
• Fluency with Python or JavaScript.
• Understand modern software development lifecycles and AI patterns.
• Capable of translating complex customer needs into technical approaches.
• Strong communication with engineers and executive stakeholders.
• Thrives in ambiguous, fast-moving environments.

Responsibilities

• Lead, hire, and mentor a high-performing team of Applied AI Engineers supporting Codex customers across strategic accounts.
• Own the operating model and technical engagement strategy for Codex Applied AI Engineering.
• Guide teams in designing and implementing AI-enhanced development workflows and scalable architectures.
• Act as the senior technical escalation point for complex customer implementations.
• Partner with Sales, Product, Research, and Engineering to align outcomes with roadmap priorities.
• Establish repeatable patterns, playbooks, reference architectures, and best practices.
• Coach engineers to operate as trusted partners to technical leadership.
• Synthesize insights from engagements into feedback for Product and Research.
• Develop deep understanding of Codex usage and potential improvements.
• Champion safe, reliable adoption of AI-powered workflows.
