Job description

The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to roughly 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.

Position: Senior Maintenance Technician

The Senior Maintenance Technician functions as the lead worker of each two-man crew assigned to the Reactive Maintenance Program within the Sewer Maintenance Division. Crews within this program respond to calls for service to address sewer system blockages and overflows by cleaning sanitary sewer mains. Staff in this role are responsible for maintaining and operating combination jet/vac equipment used to clean sewer structures with high-pressure water hoses and nozzles.

Job Responsibilities:
  1. Serve as a lead worker, assigning work and monitoring work completion.
  2. Perform semi-skilled general maintenance using proper tools and equipment, following safety policies and regulations.
  3. Operate and maintain assigned equipment and tools, conduct inspections, perform routine repairs, and monitor for replacements or repairs.
  4. Manage inventory counts and monitor tool, equipment, and supply needs.
  5. Set up and tear down traffic control work zones and safety equipment.
  6. Perform manual labor tasks such as loading/unloading equipment, setting up sewer cleaning operations, and cleaning tools.
  7. Respond to sewer backup, overflow, and odor calls, taking corrective actions including operating jet/vac trucks, setting up containment, and cleaning contaminated areas.
  8. Input data into electronic work order systems.
  9. Support emergency responses, including debris cleanup and snow/ice response.
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and three years of related equipment operation/driving experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licensing and Certifications:
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License or ability to obtain within 60 days.
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 60 days.
  • NC WPCSOCC Collection System Operator Certification Grade I or ability to obtain within 1 year.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • NC WPCSOCC Collection System Operator Certification Grade II.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Team collaboration, attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, safety awareness, organization, equipment operation, inventory management, basic math, safety principles, and customer service.
Physical and Environmental Requirements:

Positions require physical activities such as stooping, kneeling, reaching, lifting up to 100 pounds, and working in various environmental conditions including outdoor, noisy, and potentially hazardous settings.
