The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department (PRCR) mission is:

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking candidates that align with the City's values, is team-oriented and a leader with passion and vision for parks and serving the community.

The Refuse and Recycling Team consists of four staff servicing trash and recycling containers in City Parks. The Senior Maintenance Technician position is responsible for assisting Supervisor with scheduling and balancing collection routes, adding new locations, evaluating receptacle placement and locations, maintaining container inventory, coordinating dumpster service with outsourced vendors, service, and removal of Big Belly trash receptacles, along with coordinating the maintenance and repair of Refuse trucks.

The candidate for Refuse Crew Senior Maintenance Technician will lead our Refuse team of four staff maintaining trash and recycling containers in Raleigh’s Parks. The candidate will ensure daily equipment inspections and workload completion while observing safety practices, operation of trucks, lead and train Refuse crew on proper equipment operation and equipment preventative maintenance, communicate well, be reliable, safety conscious, and have a strong work ethic. Have strong leadership abilities.

  • Assists crew with trash collection, removal and requesting installation of park standard cans
  • Safely operates and maintain Refuse equipment. Performs preventative equipment maintenance, including replacing worn or damaged can liners and roll carts
  • Ensures proper tracking of work orders in a timely manner
  • Assists the City in trash cleanup and assist during inclement weather situations; may require working extended hours and weekends during storm events
  • Receives requests for collection service through CityWorks or via email, assist with developing and implementing plans
  • Evaluates resources and assign parks based on priority
  • Assists with maintaining equipment/supply inventories and keep equipment clean and in good repair
  • Assists with assigning work, training, and problem resolution, makes recommendations for personnel actions, and motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
  • Maintains maintenance records and preventative maintenance schedules for all assigned equipment
  • Adheres to all relevant regulations, guidelines, and COR standards
  • Assists City in cleanup and repair during inclement weather situations. Additionally performs on-call weekend work, which may include holidays

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma or GED and three years of assignment-related equipment operation/driving or specialized maintenance experience

OR

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent customer service and communication to solve problems and independently address issues
  • Thorough understanding of refuse collection and recycling methods and systems as applicable to a Park system
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the public
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet and word processing software
  • Utilizing Cityworks' Work Order or acquiring proficiency to navigate this system

ADA and Other Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Work involves preparing and analyzing data and figures on a computer terminal, requiring extensive reading and visual inspection of small defects or small parts. Additional duties involve operating machines (including inspection), assembly, or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

Very Heavy Work:
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 150 pounds.

Working Conditions:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat; noise; vibration; hazards; oils; infectious diseases and atmospheric conditions. Also works in indoor or office environment.
