Job description

The Pomona Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Senior Jailer. This key leadership position within the Jail Operations Unit is responsible for leading staff and participating in complex and sensitive jail operations.

Under direction, the Senior Jailer provides guidance and training to assigned staff, helps ensure the safe and secure custody of individuals housed in the City jail, coordinates bookings and prisoner transportation, maintains accurate records, and performs a variety of technical and operational duties. The ideal candidate is an experienced and dependable corrections professional who demonstrates sound judgment, integrity, and leadership in a fast-paced jail environment. They have substantial experience with jail operations, including booking, classification, medical screening, inmate supervision, prisoner releases, and transportation, as well as experience providing lead direction and training to staff. The successful candidate will possess strong knowledge of inmate security, custody procedures, applicable laws, and workplace safety, while remaining calm and professional in sensitive or emergency situations. They will also be highly organized, attentive to detail, and able to communicate respectfully and build effective working relationships with staff, law enforcement personnel, inmates, attorneys, family members, and the public.

Experience

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid Class C driver's license.
• Possession of a valid STC Corrections Officer Core Course certificate. Please submit a copy of your STC Corrections Officer Core Course certificate with your application.
• Completion of a certified STC Jail Supervisor course within one year of appointment.
• Possession of CPR and First Aid certificates.

Knowledge of

Operations, services, and activities of a jail program. Principles of lead supervision and training. Basic civil and criminal statutes. Methods and techniques of inmate security, health, safety, and custody. Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in the jail. Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment. Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting. Basic firearm safety. Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill to

Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Operate a motor vehicle safely.

Ability to

Plan, organize, and review the work of jail staff. Provide lead supervision and training to assigned staff. Interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to jail programs and functions. Interact effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Identify, process and account for evidence items and property. Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Analyze situations carefully and adopt effective courses of action.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs; exposure to blood borne pathogens, bodily fluids, violent behavior, and jail hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations.

Some examples of the duties of the Senior Jailer include:

• Lead, plan, and review the work of staff responsible for providing jail services.
• Estimate time, material, and equipment required for assigned jobs; requisition supplies as required.
• Train assigned employees including in the areas of work methods, techniques, and the use and operation of equipment.
• Verify work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
• Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
• Perform the full range of duties in the assigned area of work.
• Process and monitor inmates; receive, book, fingerprint, and photograph prisoners; perform prisoner classification and medical screening; verify and prepare custody verification forms for prisoners requiring medical treatment while in custody.
• Assume responsibility for the welfare and safety of all prisoners within the City jail facility; perform security, safety, and health checks of persons and facilities.
• Oversee the preparation of meals for those in custody; order and maintain inventory control of food and supplies.
• Prepare prisoners for court arraignment by completing required booking forms, attaching copies of warrants, holds, and medical forms, returning clothing items, sealing prisoner property, and searching and handcuffing inmates prior to transportation to Court; transport prisoners to and from Court. Ensure compliance with all Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to jail operations. Maintain supplies for Patrol including film flares, mileage books, B.O. books, blankets, and resuscitators.
• Assist Officers with belligerent prisoners and ensure safe handling. Maintain an audio/video surveillance of booking counter.
• Secure and release prisoners' property to authorized persons.
• Handle visitations for prisoners by family, ministry, and attorneys.
• Maintain the cleanliness of the jail; perform minor jail and facility maintenance; clean and maintain jail laundry; assist trusties with laundry for prisoners.
• Perform administrative support duties in other sections and bureaus within the Department as assigned.
• Assist with subpoena service and document, package and message delivery.
• Process prisoner releases by accepting bail and issuing notices to appear; process paperwork and documents used within the jail facility.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
