Job summary

The City of Laguna Beach is seeking a dedicated Jailer to supervise arrestees, control jail access, and ensure a safe, secure environment in our facility.

The ideal candidate will have high school diploma, at least one year of law enforcement related experience, a valid California driver’s license, and will complete the Jailer Training Academy within one year of hire.   • Incumbent must be at least 18 years of age by appointment.
  • Related college coursework or training in jail operations is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and supervise arrestees to maintain a safe, secure, and orderly environment.
  • Control entry and exit to the jail, process bookings, conduct interviews, and perform inmate classification and housing assignments.
  • Search arrestees and jail cells for drugs, weapons, and contraband; inspect the facility for cleanliness and Title 15 compliance.
  • Complete booking paperwork, maintain logs and records, prepare reports, and operate computer systems for records access.
  • Secure and inventory arrestee property and monies, respond to inquiries, and enforce jail rules and regulations.
  • Transport arrestees and assist with related departmental support functions, including traffic control and animal impounds.
  • Train newly hired Jailers and provide day-to-day guidance to staff.
  • Perform other departmental office, administrative, and support duties as assigned.

  • Search arrestees and jail cells for drugs, weapons, and other contraband; inspect the facility to ensure cleanliness and compliance with Title 15 standards.
  • Complete booking paperwork, maintain logs and records, prepare reports, and operate computer systems to access and update criminal justice information.
  • Secure and inventory arrestee property and monies, respond to public inquiries, and enforce jail rules, departmental policies, and applicable regulations.
  • Transport arrestees and assist with related departmental support functions, including traffic control, public facility lockups, and animal impounds.
  • Train newly hired Jailers and provide day-to-day operational guidance to lower-level staff.
  • Perform other departmental office, administrative, and support duties as assigned.

Schedule: Must be available to work a varied shift schedule, which will encompass weekdays, weekends, evenings, daytime hours, and holidays.

The normal duties for the positions can be found in the job description Jailer- Full-Time. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Any combination demonstrating the ability to effectively and successfully perform the duties of the position is considered qualifying. A typical combination is as follows:

Education

Graduation from high school or the equivalent. Incumbent must be at least 18 years of age by the time of appointment. Related college level coursework, and formal training and/or certification in the field of jail operations is highly desirable.

Experience

Minimum of one year of experience working in a related capacity in law enforcement agency, including strong public contact work is required.

License/Certificate Requirements

Due to the performance of field duties, which requires the operation of a City vehicle, a valid California Driver's license and an acceptable driving record are required.

If not already completed, incumbents will be required to successfully complete a Jailer Training Academy, or training of a similar nature. Completion will be required by the end of the twelve-month probationary period.

Application/Selection Process

All interested applicants must submit a completed online city application. Applications will be screened carefully and selected applicants will be invited to participate in a Structured Panel Interview. The selection process may be modified based on the needs of the City.

Pre-employment Process

Selected candidates must successfully pass a Police background investigation, a thorough reference check/employment verification, and a pre-employment medical exam including a drug test.
