Job summary

Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) is seeking a senior IP leader to oversee North American patent strategy, prosecution, and risk management. You will direct a cross‑functional team of patent professionals and work closely with global IP colleagues to protect Mercedes‑Benz innovations in the NA market.

The role requires deep legal and technical IP expertise, a JD, and substantial experience managing patent portfolios in automotive or tech-driven environments.

Qualifications

• BS – electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, or other science degree.
• JD – Law Degree.
• 10-12 years as an IP attorney in a law firm or in-house role.
• Licensed attorney in a US state.
• Attorney registered to practice before the USPTO.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the North American IP & Patents team (patent professionals, paralegals and admins).
• Assess the patentability and scope of IP protection; align with company IP strategy.
• Advise business units on implementing the company IP strategy.
• Monitor and evaluate third-party IP rights; advise on defensive measures and licensing.
• Coordinate with external counsel; manage patent filings and related analysis.
