Job summary

Intuitive Surgical, a global leader in robotic-assisted surgery, seeks an exceptional Counsel/Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property, to protect and expand its valuable innovations. You will lead patent portfolio management, drive IP-related deals, and provide strategic IP counsel across engineering, data science, and clinical teams.

Qualifications

• 6+ years experience in intellectual property law as a practitioner at a law firm and/or in-house.
• 2+ years of in-house counsel experience with patent portfolio management and IP-related transactions.
• Technical background in medical devices, robotics, mechanical engineering, or related fields.
• J.D. degree and membership in good standing with the California bar or RHIC eligibility.
• Admitted to practice before the USPTO.
• Ability to assess IP opportunities and risks for M&A, licensing, deals.
• Excellent writing and communication skills for diverse audiences.
• Experience managing outside counsel and controlling costs.
• Willingness to travel as required.

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage an active patent portfolio, including preparation, prosecution, and IP development.
• Support IP-related transactions (NDAs, collaboration agreements, product development, supplier contracts).
• Support strategic deals and investments, including IP due diligence and deal negotiations.
• Provide IP-related litigation and trademark/trade secret support as needed.
• Collaborate with engineers, data scientists, and executives to translate technology into protection.
• Monitor industry trends and regulatory developments affecting IP strategy.
• Report to the Associate General Counsel, IP Strategy, and coordinate with the legal team.
• Represent Intuitive Surgical with customers, regulators, and trade groups.
