Job description

Medical device company seeks a Senior Patent Counsel with at least five years of experience gained in a major law firm, IP boutique, and/or an in-house legal department. This attorney will lead a broad range of intellectual property activities, including patent drafting, filing, and prosecution; product clearance and freedom-to-operate analyses; trademark and copyright matters; licensing; and IP due diligence related to business development initiatives and M&A transactions. The role will also support the development and execution of the company's overall intellectual property strategy and help strengthen and expand its patent portfolio. Working closely with product development, engineering, sales, marketing, finance, legal, and executive leadership teams, the Senior Patent Counsel will provide strategic guidance to identify and mitigate competitive IP risks, ensure product designs align with intellectual property objectives, and support innovation across the organization. This individual will regularly communicate with inventors, business stakeholders, outside counsel, and senior leadership to drive effective IP management and support business growth. The successful candidate will be a proactive, detail-oriented attorney with excellent communication skills, strong business judgment, and a commitment to confidentiality, ethics, and compliance. A degree in electrical engineering or mechanical engineering is preferred but experience with software, robotics, medical imaging, and electrical/electro-mechanical medical products with a different technical degree is acceptable as well.
