Job summary

Foundation Medicine seeks a Patent Counsel II to lead patent prosecution and portfolio management for next-gen sequencing, AI, and computational oncology technologies in a Boston-based role.

You will partner with R&D, Product Development, Bioinformatics, and Business Development to protect innovations, advise on publication and trade secret strategies, and contribute to a global patent strategy with mentorship from senior IP attorneys.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• 3+ years of patent prosecution and portfolio management experience.
• Active membership in at least one U.S. state bar.
• Registered Patent Attorney admitted before the USPTO.

Responsibilities

• Draft, prosecute, and manage U.S. and foreign patent applications relating to molecular diagnostics, multiomic profiling technologies, bioinformatics, AI and ML systems, in vitro diagnostic devices, data processing and computational biology, and related methods.
• Partner with scientists, engineers, data scientists, and business leaders to identify patentable inventions.
• Develop prosecution strategies to maximize portfolio value while supporting business objectives.
• Coordinate and manage outside counsel globally.
• Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, invalidity, and non-infringement analyses.
• Advise teams on publication review, trade secret protection, and invention disclosures.
