Job summary

Novartis Group of Companies in Cambridge, MA seeks a Patent Attorney II to protect groundbreaking discoveries and steer IP strategy across biologics, gene therapies, and nucleic acid technologies.

You will partner with R&D teams to identify inventions, build robust portfolios, render strategic opinions on patentability and freedom to operate, and support transactions with outside counsel to safeguard innovation.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor with bar admission and USPTO registration.
• PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, genetics, biotechnology, pharmaceutical sciences, or related life sciences.
• 7+ years as a patent attorney in a law firm or pharmaceutical/biotech environment.
• Strong expertise in US and PCT patent law, with knowledge of European patent law.
• Ability to partner with scientific and business stakeholders to deliver strategic IP advice.
• Strong analytical, communication, and decision-making skills with high attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, global environment.

Responsibilities

• Advise R&D clients on invention protection and portfolio development.
• Build and manage patent portfolios across biologics, gene therapies, and nucleic acid technologies.
• Render opinions on patentability, validity, and freedom to operate.
• Apply national and global patent law knowledge to strategy and advice.
• Support IP for transactions including M&A, collaborations, and in-licensing.
• Ensure high-quality, timely work aligned with business goals and budgets.
