Job summary

Flatgigs is seeking a senior engineer to design an end-to-end IoT platform while also delivering production backend code. You will own cloud infra as interim DevOps in a fast-moving early-stage environment, remotely with discipline, and drive architecture decisions autonomously.

You will tackle device auth at scale, time-series ingestion, multi-tenant isolation, and real-time web delivery. Strong experience with MQTT, cloud IoT services, and IaC is expected.

Qualifications

• 7–12 years software or systems engineering; min 4 years building IoT platform backends.
• Expert-level AWS IoT Core or Azure IoT Hub deployments.
• Expert MQTT knowledge: v3.1/v5.0; broker sizing and clustering.
• Python and Node.js/TypeScript production backend experience; Go is a plus.
• Experience with time-series databases (InfluxDB / TimescaleDB / AWS Timestream).
• Terraform or CloudFormation for infrastructure as code.
• Multi-tenant SaaS backend architecture with data isolation and access control.
• Security fundamentals: TLS/mTLS, X.509, OAuth 2.0, JWT, secrets management.

Responsibilities

• Design end-to-end IoT platform architecture from devices to real-time delivery.
• Define multi-tenant data model with strict data isolation and tokens.
• Develop device lifecycle system including provisioning and authentication.
• Architect protocol abstraction for MQTT/Modbus/OPC-UA/CoAP/HTTP.
• Build a configurable rule engine for alerts and automations with no-code options.
• Plan OTA firmware update management and fleet orchestration.
• Write ADRs for major technical decisions and maintain documentation.
• Scale from pilot to 500,000+ devices without major rework.
• Build core services: device management, telemetry ingestion, rule engine.
• Develop REST and GraphQL APIs with OpenAPI specs; implement real-time WebSocket delivery.
• Ensure reliability with SLOs, runbooks, and incident response.
