Job summary

American Family Insurance in Boston is seeking a Cloud Platform Engineer to design, build, and operate cloud and DevOps capabilities across AWS and GCP. You will develop Kubernetes and IaC foundations, and contribute to secure, scalable delivery.

The role emphasizes Backstage, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and SRE practices, with responsibilities spanning automation, tooling, and collaboration with engineering teams.

Qualifications

• Experience designing, implementing, and managing an internal developer portal, preferably with Backstage.io.
• Ability to create self-service tools and streamline developer workflows.
• Experience developing custom Backstage plugins using TypeScript, Node.js, and React.
• Experience configuring Backstage Software Catalog and Scaffolder templates.
• Extensive cloud experience with AWS and/or GCP; knowledge of VPC, IAM, S3, and managed Kubernetes (EKS/GKE).
• Proficiency with Terraform and IaC practices.
• Experience with Crossplane.io for Kubernetes-native cloud management.
• Strong containerization experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
• CI/CD experience with GitLab CI/CD; integrating tools into pipelines.
• Artifact management with JFrog Artifactory.
• Scripting in Python, Go, or Bash.
• SRE and observability: SLOs, error budgets; Datadog monitoring.
• Experience with Argo CD/Flux for GitOps.
• Experience with monitoring/logging/tracing and runbooks.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate cloud platforms and DevOps capabilities across AWS and GCP.
• Develop Kubernetes and IaC foundations; standardize project creation with templates.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automation across engineering teams.
