Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, seeks a Full-time Senior Instructional Assistant in the Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00 am - 6:30 pm. This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt Status, Grade 25 position.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, set up, and break down lab experiments to support instructional objectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents for laboratory work.
  • Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance on specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Dispose of hazardous waste per regulations.
  • Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals and lab results.
  • Maintain laboratory areas, storage, and supplies.
  • Assist instructors and students during labs to ensure safety.
  • Provide input for updating laboratory preparation books and guidance.
  • May research equipment for laboratory use for input into purchases.
  • May supervise student laboratory assistants.

Education

Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field
Two years of related experience

Job Summary

Montgomery College, Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, seeks candidates for a Full-time Senior Instructional Assistant in the Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 10:00 am - 6:30 pm. This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt Status, Grade 25 position. For non-exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. Under supervision and/or direction, the senior instructional associate will maintain assigned instructional laboratory and support and coordinate the daily operations and activities. Senior Instructional Assistant may specialize in specific academic discipline(s).

Responsibilities
  • Assemble/set-up and break-down laboratory experiments, demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with guidance from the academic department in order to support instructional objectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents needed for laboratory work.
  • Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on specialized laboratory equipment, if applicable.
  • Dispose of waste chemicals and/or special medical waste in accordance with applicable hazardous waste regulations and procedures, if applicable.
  • Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals/products used in laboratories and laboratory results, if applicable.
  • Maintain/feed live organisms/biological specimens, if applicable.
  • Maintain laboratory areas, equipment storage, test equipment, tools, supply/stock rooms, etc.
  • Receive/unpack and put away deliveries of materials.
  • Ensure security of equipment storage and stock rooms.
  • Monitor/inventory equipment and supplies.
  • Inspect and test safety equipment and supplies.
  • Identify maintenance issues for reporting to appropriate authorities.
  • Assist instructors and students during labs as necessary by ensuring the safety of the laboratory set-up and associated equipment.
  • Provide input as requested for updating laboratory preparation books and guidance.
  • May research equipment for laboratory use for input into purchase.
  • May maintain statistics regarding student laboratory use and prepare reports and other written materials regarding operation of laboratories.
  • May supervise student laboratory assistants.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related academic field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience.

The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.

Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.

Salary Range

Hiring Range: $29.51 - $38.35 hourly. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $47.20 hourly.

Work Location

Montgomery College does not currently offer voluntary remote work, or withhold payroll taxes for states outside of its tax reciprocity agreements. As a result, employees must reside in, and perform any approved telework from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania. Employees residing in other states at the time of hire are not eligible for telework until they have secured a permanent residence in one of the states listed above.
