Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, is seeking a FT Senior Instructional Associate in the Chemistry Department. The role supports instructional labs, coordinates daily operations, and assists both faculty and students in laboratory settings.

The position is non-exempt, bargaining-unit status, with a 2:00PM–10:30PM M–Th schedule and 8:30AM–5:00PM on Fridays. Telework is not available; on-site work in Maryland required. Monday–Friday, with occasional weekend daytime assignments.

  • Bachelor's degree in an academic field related to the assigned area plus two years of related experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience may be considered.

Job Description

Montgomery College, Rockville Campus, has an immediate opening for a FT Senior Instructional Associate in the Chemistry Department. The work schedule is 5 days/40 hours a week. The work schedule is 2:00PM to 10:30PM Monday through Thursday, and 8:30AM to 5:00PM on Fridays. Flexibility is required to accommodate occasional weekend or daytime assignments. This is a Bargaining, Non-Exempt, Grade25 position. For non‑exempt positions, you are not eligible to work a secondary job at Montgomery College. This position is not eligible for telework. This is not a teaching position. The Senior Instructional Associate will provide lab assistance to the Instructional Lab Coordinators and Instructional Lab Manager. Montgomery College promotes and creates a working and learning environment rooted in the basic tenets of fairness, belonging, and inclusiveness. Under supervision and/or direction, the Senior Instructional Associate will maintain assigned instructional laboratory and support and coordinate the daily operations and activities. The work involves setting up and organizing work areas for classroom instruction, and coordinating with and providing instructional assistance services to faculty to ensure laboratory exercises demonstrate learning, scientific, and/or technical principles to support classroom instruction. Incumbents assist in providing technical assistance to students and faculty performing research and accessing instructional resources. Plan activities, assess inventory and maintain supplies and materials, check/maintain equipment and assist with guiding students regarding proper use of equipment. An incumbent follows specific guidelines developed by faculty/supervisor in providing instructional support in the laboratory.

Duties
  • Assemble/set-up and break-down laboratory experiments, demonstrations, and practical exercises in accordance with guidance from the academic department in order to support instructional objectives.
  • Prepare solutions and reagents needed for laboratory work.
  • Clean and store laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Perform minor maintenance or troubleshooting on specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Dispose of waste chemicals in accordance with applicable hazardous waste regulations and procedures.
  • Maintain safety data sheets for chemicals/products used in laboratories and laboratory results.
  • Maintain laboratory areas, equipment storage, test equipment, tools, supply/stock rooms, etc.
  • Receive/unpack and put away deliveries of materials.
  • Ensure security of equipment storage and stock rooms.
  • Monitor/inventory equipment and supplies.
  • Inspect and test safety equipment and supplies.
  • Identify maintenance issues for reporting to appropriate authorities.
  • Assist instructors and students during labs as necessary by ensuring the safety of the laboratory set-up and associated equipment.
  • Provide input as requested for updating laboratory preparation books and guidance.
  • May research equipment for laboratory use for input into purchase.
  • May maintain statistics regarding student laboratory use and prepare reports and other written materials regarding operation of laboratories.
  • May supervise student laboratory assistants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in an academic field related to the assigned area(s) plus two (2) years of related experience.
  • The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
  • Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry is strongly preferred.
  • More than 2 years of recent experience working in an instructional chemistry lab, including preparing lab materials and maintaining safety and inventory.
  • Experience with troubleshooting scientific instrumentation and small equipment repair.
  • Familiarity with the proper handling and disposal of chemical and hazardous waste.
Hiring Range

Hiring Range: $29.51-$38.35 hourly. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $47.20.

Location Policy

Montgomery College does not currently offer voluntary remote work,or withhold payroll taxes for states outside of its tax reciprocity agreements. As a result, employees must reside in, and perform any approved telework from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, or Pennsylvania. Employees residing in other states at the time of hire are not eligible for telework until they have secured a permanent residence in one of the states listed above.
