Job summary

Astronomer is seeking Senior/Staff Software Engineers on our Infrastructure team to own the architecture of the systems that stand up, configure, and manage the Airflow infrastructure across cloud and private deployments.

You will design and build control-plane services, APIs, and security posture, mentor engineers, and drive reliability and observability at scale. This role is full-time and hybrid, with responsibilities spanning production systems and cross-team collaboration.

Qualifications

• 5+ years in infrastructure or systems engineering; 8+ years for Staff.
• Kubernetes expertise; build Operators/CRDs; Helm deployments.
• Experience designing REST or gRPC APIs with versioning and backward compatibility.
• Strong networking, distributed systems, reliability engineering, and security practices.
• Go and/or TypeScript; ability to pick up new languages quickly.
• Observability and distributed tracing for multi-layer systems.

Responsibilities

• Design and own the architecture of the systems that stand up, scale, and manage the infrastructure Airflow runs on, end-to-end (design, implementation, tests, documentation, rollout).
• Design and evolve the APIs (REST/gRPC) that drive infrastructure lifecycle management and integrations.
• Own the networking and security posture, including authentication, authorization, secure communication, CVE remediation, image hardening, and compliance with standards.
• Architect observability across the stack: metrics, logs, and traces end-to-end across services and networks.
• Participate in on-call rotation, incident diagnosis and post-mortems, with remediation items tracked in sprints.
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar on design, code review, testing, and operational rigor.
