Job summary

Astronomer is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture and development of a self-contained, cloud-agnostic platform that provisions and orchestrates Airflow instances entirely on customer infrastructure.

You will own core architecture, APIs, and observability across on-premises environments, mentoring senior engineers and collaborating with product and exec teams.

Qualifications

• 10+ years in enterprise infrastructure engineering or equivalent
• Experience building production-grade infrastructure control planes
• Observability stack design and implementation experience
• Strong Kubernetes expertise, including Operators/CRDs and Helm
• Designing for hybrid and air-gapped environments
• Proficient in Go, Python, or TypeScript; distributed systems
• Clear, actionable technical documentation and RFCs

Responsibilities

• Define and build end-to-end control and data planes for self-contained platform
• Architect APIs (REST/gRPC) with long-term backward compatibility
• Design platform observability including metrics, logs, traces
• Ensure compatibility across isolated and zero-egress networks
• Provide technical leadership and roadmap alignment with product and execs
• Mentor senior engineers and drive design reviews
