Job summary

W.G. Tomko, Inc. is seeking an experienced HVAC Piping Estimator to support estimating and preconstruction of commercial and industrial mechanical projects.

This role develops accurate, competitive estimates from document review through pricing, labor evaluation, scope development, and final bid preparation. The ideal candidate understands mechanical piping construction from both the plans and the field perspective, reviews drawings and specs, performs detailed takeoffs, evaluates labor/material

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience estimating in commercial or industrial mechanical construction.
• Knowledge of HVAC piping systems, materials, equipment, installation practices.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, specifications, schedules, and construction documents.
• Experience performing detailed material and labor takeoffs.
• Understanding of piping fabrication and field installation methods.
• Ability to evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing and build a complete project scope.
• Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines while maintaining accuracy.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and familiarity with mechanical estimating/takeoff software.
• Strong attention to detail and the judgment to recognize missing scope or potential estimating risk.

Responsibilities

• Prepare estimates for HVAC/mechanical piping projects.
• Review construction drawings, specifications, addenda, bid documents, related project requirements.
• Perform material/equipment takeoffs for piping systems and associated mechanical equipment.
• Develop labor estimates based on project scope, installation requirements, productivity, schedule.
• Solicit, review, and level vendor and subcontractor quotations.
• Identify exclusions, clarifications, scope gaps, constructability concerns, and potential project risks.
• Prepare complete/organized bid packages for management review.
• Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, scope reviews, and turnover meetings.
• Evaluate alternate materials, equipment, installation methods, and value-engineering opportunities.
• Coordinate with project management, operations, field supervision, vendors, subcontractors, and fabrication teams.
• Support plan-and-spec, design-assist, and design-build opportunities.
• Consider prefabrication opportunities during estimating and preconstruction to improve field productivity.
• Maintain accurate estimating files, historical pricing, vendor information, and bid documentation.
• Assist with change-order pricing and additional estimating needs as projects progress.
