Job summary

Uncommon Schools seeks an HVAC Operating Engineer to join the New Jersey Facilities team. The role requires at least seven years of relevant HVAC experience to maintain, repair, and optimize HVAC systems across historic and newer buildings.

You will work with the facilities group and external consultants, manage multiple projects, mentor junior staff, and ensure safety, budget, and timely completion while maintaining comfortable educational spaces for students and staff.

Qualifications

• Significant journeyman-level HVAC experience and code compliance knowledge.
• Strong background in commercial heating projects including boilers and furnaces.
• Ability to read as-built plans and construction drawings.
• Read and interpret HVAC technical manuals, schematics, and submittals.
• Advanced knowledge of BMS systems and operations.
• Procure replacement parts and manage repairs.
• Carry EPA refrigerant-handling certification and tools.
• Strong communication with facilities staff and vendors.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, maintain, repair, and modify HVAC systems in multiple buildings.
• Lead minor HVAC projects and supervise larger ones with vendors.
• Coordinate with senior facilities team and outside consultants on planning and timelines.
• Mentor junior staff and handle HVAC communications with stakeholders.
• Ensure safety, codes compliance, and quality control across tasks.
