Job summary

AES Corporation seeks a Senior Substation Engineer to oversee high voltage design and construction for renewable energy projects. The role focuses on owner’s engineering oversight of EPCs contracted to design and build HV facilities, with emphasis on ensuring compliance and grid integration for solar, wind, and BESS systems.

Ideal candidates will have strong HV experience, relationships with utilities, and the ability to coordinate testing and commissioning in coordination with interconnection

Qualifications

• B.S. Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.
• 7+ years of substation design experience.
• 2+ years of HV project engineering experience.
• Proficient in readings of HV schematics.
• Knowledge of power system modeling (load flow, insulation coordination, grounding, arc-flash).
• Understanding of grid integration for renewables.
• Strong communication and ability to lead technical discussions with HV EPCs, utilities, and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction for HV substations and lines (35kV–500kV).
• Establish and maintain relationships with HV contractors.
• Review substation designs for interconnection compliance and standards.
• Provide design review for issues in project documentation.
• Review power system studies (load flow, short circuits, harmonics, TOV).
• Coordinate with interconnection providers to design collector substations per requirements.
• Support substation commissioning by reviewing testing and coordinating with utilities/ISO.
• Collaborate with project management, development, interconnection, real estate, permitting, attorneys, finance, and field teams.
• Travel and fieldwork up to 25% of projects in Eastern/Central US.
