Job summary

AES Corporation is seeking a senior Substation Engineer to oversee HV design and EPC coordination for renewable projects in the Eastern US. You will ensure compliance with interconnection agreements and reliability standards, guiding design reviews and studies related to load flows, harmonics, and insulation coordination.

You will liaise with utilities, EPCs, and internal stakeholders, traveling to project sites and supporting commissioning activities.

Qualifications

• B.S.Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.
• 7+ years of substation design experience, Physical or P&C.
• 2+ years of project engineering in HV role.
• Proficient in readings of HV breakers and Main Power Transformers schematics.
• Basic knowledge of power system modeling (load flow, grounding, insulation coordination).
• Understanding of grid integration requirements for renewables.
• Strong communication and ability to lead technical discussions with HV EPCs, utilities, and stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and prioritization of multiple projects.

Responsibilities

• Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction for Solar, Wind, and BESS HV substations and lines (35kV–500kV).
• Build and maintain relationships with HV contractors.
• Review Substation EPC designs for interconnection requirements and standards.
• Provide design review and advise on issues in project documentation.
• Review power system studies (load flows, short circuits, harmonics, etc.).
• Coordinate with interconnection providers to design collector substations per Provider requirements.
• Support substation commissioning by reviewing testing and coordinating with utility/ISO.
• Collaborate with project team including management, development, interconnection, real estate, permitting, attorneys, finance, and construction.
• Travel/fieldwork ~25%; projects mainly in Eastern/Central US.
