Job summary

AES is seeking a senior Substation Engineer to oversee high-voltage design and construction for renewables projects across the Eastern US. You will act as owner’s engineer, review designs from EPC firms, and ensure compliance with interconnection and reliability standards.

The role requires strong HV engineering expertise, stakeholder management, and field oversight. Travel and fieldwork are expected, with projects primarily in the Eastern and Central US.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of substation design experience (Physical or P&C).
• 2+ years of HV project engineering experience.
• Strong communication skills for leading technical discussions with HV EPCs, Utilities and internal stakeholders.
• Basic knowledge of power system modeling (load flow, insulation coordination, grounding, arc-flash, TOV, harmonics).

Responsibilities

• Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction for high voltage substations and transmission lines (35 kV–500 kV).
• Establish and maintain relationships with high voltage contractors.
• Review substation EPC designs for compliance with interconnection requirements and standards.
• Review power system studies and advise on technically incorrect or inconsistent issues.
• Coordinate with interconnection providers to design collector substations per requirements.
• Support substation commissioning by reviewing testing and coordinating with utilities/ISO.
• Collaborate with project teams across management, development, real estate, permitting, attorneys, finance, and construction.
• Travel and fieldwork ~25% with projects mainly in Eastern or Central US.
