Job summary

AES Corporation is seeking a dynamic Substation Engineer to oversee high voltage design and construction for solar, wind, and storage projects across the Eastern US. You will act as an owner’s engineer, guiding EPCs and coordinating with utilities, with a focus on ensuring grid compatibility and reliability.

The role requires a B.S. in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems), 7+ years in HV substation design, and strong leadership. Travel up to 25% is expected in the Eastern and Central US.

Qualifications

• BS in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.
• 7+ years of substation design experience in Physical or P&C.
• 2+ years of HV project engineering experience.
• Proficient in readings of schematics for HV breakers and transformers.
• Knowledge of grid integration for renewables.
• Strong communication and leadership in HV EPCs and utilities.

Responsibilities

• Oversee EPC contractor engineering design and construction for HV substations and lines (35kV–500kV).
• Establish and maintain relationships with HV contractors.
• Review Substation EPC designs for interconnection compliance and standards.
• Provide design review for technical issues in project documentation.
• Review power system studies (load flow, short circuit, harmonics).
• Coordinate with interconnection providers to meet requirements.
• Support substation commissioning by reviewing testing and coordinating with utilities.
• Work with project team across management, development, interconnection, real estate, permitting, finance, and construction.
• Travel and fieldwork 25% to the Eastern/Central US.
