Job summary

Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s National Center for Computational Sciences seeks an HPC Linux Systems Engineer to strengthen security, performance, and reliability of Frontier and related HPC environments.

You will join the NCCS Systems Section within the HPC Scalable Systems Group, handling installation, deployment, upgrades, problem diagnosis, and performance analysis across large-scale clusters, with on-call rotation and a focus on safe, efficient operation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a scientific or technical field.
8+ years of Linux systems experience.
Experience in classified environments including security policies and compliance (NIST, STIGs).
Experience designing and deploying HPC systems to meet compute and security requirements.

Responsibilities

Install, integrate, and administer HPC Linux clusters and high-speed network.
Diagnose system operational problems quickly and effectively.
Coordinate with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems.
Plan and coordinate hardware and software changes with customer participation using change management processes.
Port and write system management tools.
Document system administration procedures.
Participate in 24/7 on-call support rotation and off-hours maintenance.
Implement systems into NCCS environment and analyze performance.
Align actions with ORNL core values: Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety and Service.
