Job summary

City of Providence is seeking a Deputy Chief Housing Compliance Official – Structures and Zoning to oversee the Division of Compliance within the Inspection and Standards Department. The role focuses on coordinating inspectors, establishing division policy, and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and ordinances.

The position requires extensive knowledge of the Rhode Island State Building Code and Providence Zoning Ordinance, plus strong written and oral communication.

Qualifications

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Five (5) years in construction industry knowledge and ability to read plans and identify deviations.
• Five (5) years as an inspector for the City of Providence in Inspections & Standards.
• ICC certification requirements or ability to obtain within 5 months of appointment.
• Knowledge of RI State Building Code, Providence Zoning Ordinance, and related laws.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate Compliance Inspectors and assist in field concerns.
• Represent the City in housing court or related proceedings as needed.
• May perform after-hours emergency inspections as required.
• Inspect existing structures for compliance with Rhode Island Building Code and local ordinances.
• Prepare reports and notices of violation with clear recommendations for corrections.
• Maintain records and data related to inspections, permits, and violations.
• Foster relations with City Council and other stakeholders.
