Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate mechanical problems, perform diagnostic tests, interpret the results, and decide the best course of action needed.

  • Orders parts and processes payments.

  • Hold safety meetings and provide training on the use of all shop equipment used in fabrication and machining.
  • Runs reports to ensure that preventive maintenance is accomplished on equipment.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is actively seeking a Senior Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in Gillette, Wyoming. This full‑time position offers a fantastic opportunity for a skilled mechanic to make a real impact while working on automotive equipment and heavy‑duty vehicles. In this role, you will be responsible for performing diesel and gasoline engine overhauls and tune‑ups, as well as brake, steering, transmission, and hydraulic repairs to ensure all equipment remains in optimal working condition.

Gillette is located on the rolling hills midway between Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park, and is one hour from Devil’s Tower National Monument. The Powder River Basin, a geological structural basin, produces over one-third of our nation’s coal. You’ll have easy access to: hunting, fishing, camping, skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, golfing, and other outdoor activities in the Black Hills or Big Horn Mountains. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to those who have completed any equipment certification exams, skills in using fleet maintenance software, and specialized automotive repair training.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of basic computer operation.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of diesel, heavy equipment, and light‑duty vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of electronic principles and how to use diagnostic tools.
  • Knowledge of troubleshooting techniques.
  • Knowledge in decision‑making.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Education & Experience Substitution: 3-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain a CDL.
  • OR
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Experience: 0-1 year of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) with acquired knowledge at the level of a Heavy Mechanic.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls at any time, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Individuals must report to the Department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving the call. Acceptance of an appointment to this classification signifies that the individual is aware of this requirement and will comply with it. Failure to be available for emergency work without an acceptable excuse will be grounds for immediate disciplinary action and possible dismissal.
  • Individuals must report to the department Shop within 30 minutes of receiving a call.
  • Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools.
  • Frequent exposure to hazardous materials.
  • Ability to stand/sit and operate equipment for long periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors in adverse environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work around high‑speed traffic and heavy construction equipment.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry 50 pounds independently.
  • Individuals in this classification must be available for emergency work calls.
NOTES:
  • FLSA: Non‑Exempt
  • Individuals in this classification will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Individuals in this classification must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
  • This position includes a $100/month tool allowance.
  • WYDOT will conduct motor vehicle record checks to verify a valid driver's license
  • Must be able to obtain a Welding Certification Card.

    • One year of service to WYDOT must be completed, failure to complete this requirement will forfeit the hiring incentive, and funds will be recouped from final pay.
    • Internal candidates would be required to remain in the position for a minimum of one (1) year from their promotion date.
    • Employees would only be eligible for one (1) hiring bonus in a 12‑month period.
    • If the employee elects to downgrade through an active recruitment and/or appointment during the twelve (12) month period, they would be required to pay the bonus back.
