Job summary

State of Wyoming, Wyoming Department of Transportation, seeks a Highway Maintenance Technician in Rock Springs to support the Maintenance Program. Qualifications

• Associate's Degree (Engineering) preferred or 2-4 years of related highway maintenance experience.
• 0-1 year of related work experience (highway maintenance/highway construction) or substitution with 2-4 years of experience.
• Must obtain Class A Commercial Driver's License within 12 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain Water certifications if necessary; defensive driving, First Aid/CPR, and Flagger certifications recommended.

Responsibilities

• Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently.
• Assists with training other technicians on equipment operation and maintenance.
• Flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices under limited supervision.
• Operates heavy equipment including trucks with attachments to remove snow and ice.
• Performs routine maintenance of highway facilities and may work with water treatment duties per EPA/DEQ.
• Completes required state and federal trainings to obtain certifications.
• Uses agency computer systems for training and performance evaluations.

This position is based in Rock Springs, Wyoming, and provides safety support and representation for all of WYDOT District 3. Essential Functions

• Maintains and operates complex equipment safely and proficiently
• Assists with training other technicians in the operation and maintenance of equipment
• Under limited supervision, flags traffic and sets up traffic control devices
• Operates heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, single and tandem axle trucks, equipped with an auger, aerial lift equipment, or equipped with plows, wing plows, sanders, and chemical systems to remove snow and ice from the roadway surface
• Responsible for the rehabilitation of roadway surfaces and/or traffic control devices such as signs and pavement markings
• Responsible for general maintenance of highway-related facilities such as rest areas; this may include performing water and wastewater treatment according to EPA and DEQ requirements
• Attends and completes all state and federal training required to obtain/maintain certifications, perform inspections, and learn new skills
• Communicates information in order to update others' status and/or process effectiveness
• Utilizes computers for agency practices, such as training and performance evaluations, and keeps up to date on technological advances with specialized equipment
• Performs duties involved in removing snow and ice from roadways; determines the effectiveness of treatments and may determine when a change in treatment is necessary
• Responsible for adhering to all state and federal safety and quality standards, including the correct use of all associated personal protective equipment

Preferences / Agency Requirements

Preference may be given to applicants who have a current Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements prior to employment.

• Must have the ability to obtain water certifications if necessary.
• Must have the ability to obtain a Certification to operate specified equipment as directed by WYDOT.
• Must have the ability to obtain a Certificate of course completion of Defensive Driving.
• Must have the ability to obtain a First Aid/CPR certification.
• Must have the ability to obtain a Flagger certification.

Knowledge

• Knowledge of state highway pavement marking and signing standards
• Knowledge of state and federal highway safety standards and traffic control procedures
• Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair procedures.
• Knowledge of hazardous materials response procedures
• Knowledge of federal and state requirements for the proper use of personal protective equipment
• Knowledge of basic equipment operation for single and tandem-axle trucks, loaders, and tractors
• Knowledge of safe work procedures, First Aid and CPR, and OSHA Safety Data Sheets for chemicals used in maintenance activities
• Knowledge of and the ability to utilize basic office equipment such as computers, calculators, and telephones

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Associate's Degree (typically in Engineering)

Experience:

0-1 year of relative work experience (typically in Highway Maintenance/Highway Construction)

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

• Must have the ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within twelve (12) months of hire

Physical Working Conditions

• Frequent use of manual and powered hand tools

• WYDOT conducts motor vehicle record checks to verify that candidates possess a valid driver's license.
