Job summary

Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) in Durango is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator IV to operate and maintain heavy highway equipment. You will mentor others, manage maintenance tasks, and support regional crews on safety and efficiency.

Role emphasizes proficiency with vac-trucks, complex machinery, and SAP data entry. Strong knowledge of traffic control and environmental safety is required.

Qualifications

• At least four (4) years of heavy equipment operating experience at journey level.
• Experience operating backhoes, graders, or specialty equipment (e.g., laydown, trackhoe, excavator, vactor truck).
• Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to mentor others on safe operation.

Responsibilities

• Operates vac-truck and heavy equipment with complex controls.
• Mentors employees on equipment operation and maintenance.
• Performs inspections, maintenance, and safe operation per CDOT guidelines.
• Plans, leads, and completes specialized tasks with large equipment.
• Uses SAP to enter data, time sheets, and work orders.
