Job summary

Colorado Department of Transportation in Durango is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform field preventive maintenance and act as FMCSA Inspection Specialist. The role blends field service and shop work, delivering skilled, professional maintenance across CDOT equipment.

The position requires diagnostic and repair expertise on heavy diesel equipment, with on-call and OT, and offers CDL support, training, and comprehensive benefits.

Qualifications

• Four years of progressively responsible experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair, including diagnosis and repair of heavy diesel equipment.
• Combination of relevant education and experience equal to four years; formal apprenticeship or higher coursework considered.
• Experience with 10-ton/15’ mower tractors and similar heavy equipment is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance and annual safety inspections.
• Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment malfunctions across major systems.
• Overhaul and rebuild components and equipment as needed.
• Use test equipment to diagnose defects or malfunctions.
• Maintain safe, clean, and organized work environment.
• Travel to remote locations for field repairs and attend trainings as required.
