Power Systems Engineering | EMS | AI-Assisted Grid Operations
Industry:
Electric Utilities, Power Generation & Grid Technology
Level:
Senior / Principal Engineering
Location:
United States
Position Overview:
Artificial intelligence is beginning to influence how electric utilities forecast, analyze, and manage increasingly complex power systems. As these technologies advance, a critical engineering challenge is emerging: ensuring AI-generated recommendations remain consistent with actual grid conditions, operating limits, and reliability requirements.
ROI Agency is seeking experienced Energy Management Systems (EMS) and Power Systems Engineers with the technical background to contribute to the validation, testing, and operational assurance of AI-assisted grid applications.
The engineering focus combines established EMS capabilities, power system simulation, real-time applications, and emerging AI technologies.
This work requires a strong understanding of how electrical systems behave under normal and abnormal operating conditions, particularly when analytical models produce recommendations that must be evaluated before operational use.
Power Systems & AI Validation
- Evaluate AI-generated recommendations against power flow constraints, equipment operating limits, and system reliability requirements.
- Develop and execute validation scenarios using EMS applications, network models, and historical operating data.
- Assess model performance during contingency events, abnormal system conditions, and changing generation or load patterns.
- Compare AI-generated outputs against state estimator results, real-time contingency analysis, and established engineering models.
- Identify discrepancies between predicted system behavior and actual or simulated operating conditions.
- Develop engineering acceptance criteria for AI-assisted forecasting, grid analytics, and operational decision-support applications.
Simulation & Operational Assurance
- Develop test scenarios using power system simulation tools, dispatcher training simulators, and digital twin environments.
- Evaluate model uncertainty, performance degradation, and failure modes under changing operating conditions.
- Establish technical requirements for human oversight, operational fallback, and escalation.
- Support verification and validation of AI-assisted applications prior to integration into operational environments.
- Document test results, technical findings, and recommendations for engineering and operational review.
EMS & Operational Technology Integration
- Evaluate the integration of AI applications with EMS, SCADA, ADMS, and related operational platforms.
- Assess telemetry quality, network model accuracy, data integrity, and system availability requirements.
- Collaborate with EMS developers, grid operations engineers, cybersecurity specialists, and AI development teams.
- Support architecture and technical design reviews involving AI-enabled operational systems.
- Identify cyber-physical risks associated with inaccurate, delayed, or unexpected system recommendations.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 7+ years of experience in EMS engineering, grid applications, transmission operations technology, or power systems analysis.
- Strong working knowledge of power flow, state estimation, real-time contingency analysis, and electric grid operating constraints.
- Experience supporting EMS or advanced grid applications within electric utility or grid operating environments.
- Familiarity with SCADA integration, network models, telemetry, and operational data.
- Experience using power system simulation, engineering analysis, or grid modeling tools.
- Ability to independently evaluate engineering results and identify potential operational consequences.
- Experience collaborating with utility operations, engineering, and technical development teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Python, MATLAB, or comparable engineering programming experience.
- Exposure to machine learning, predictive analytics, AI model evaluation, or intelligent automation.
- Experience with PSS®E, PowerWorld, PSCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, or comparable modeling platforms.
- Experience with dispatcher training simulators or digital twin applications.
- Understanding of NERC reliability requirements and utility operating procedures.
- Experience developing engineering test plans, automated validation methods, or simulation frameworks.
- Familiarity with model drift, uncertainty quantification, and AI performance monitoring.
- Exposure to OT cybersecurity and cyber-physical system assurance.
Technical Background
This specialization is particularly well suited to experienced EMS engineers who understand the relationship between network models, real-time applications, and grid operating decisions.
Strong candidates may have spent their careers developing, configuring, maintaining, or validating EMS applications, including state estimation, contingency analysis, network modeling, and dispatcher training environments.
