Job summary

The North Slope Borough in Barrow, AK is seeking a Government Accountant to provide professional and technical governmental accounting services for the accounting division, including general ledger, grant accounting, payroll, and financial reporting.

The role requires knowledge of GAAP for government, strong analytical skills, and the ability to prepare reconciliations, assist with audits, and maintain compliance with federal, state, and local policies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business required; CPA license preferred.
• Two years of college accounting courses and three years accounting experience, including one year of government accounting experience; equivalent combination allowed.
• One year of supervisory work experience required.

Responsibilities

• Reviews, approves and posts general ledger, accounts payable, revenue, accounts receivable, grant accounting, and payroll.
• Prepare monthly General Ledger, investment, and other reconciliations and reports.
• Prepare complex journal entries; interpret requests and prepare entries.
• Assist with annual Audit preparations and Comprehensive Annual Financial Report.
• Manage daily cash flow and on-line banking administration.
• Maintain chart of accounts and perform bank reconciliation.
• Provide training and support on accounting issues to other departments.
• Establish cooperative relations with villages, departments and outside agencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
