Job summary

Fairbanks North Star Borough seeks a skilled accountant to manage technical accounting tasks, maintain general ledger balances, budgets, and encumbrances. You will perform journal entries, budget work, and reconciliations for multiple funds, supporting the financial reporting process.

The role requires strong analytical abilities, advanced Excel skills, and experience with an integrated financial management system. The position involves year-end tasks and limited supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in accounting with coursework including Intermediate Accounting.
• Three years of progressively responsible accounting experience or two years in public accounting; other relevant experience may substitute.
• Proven analytical ability and experience with an integrated financial management system; knowledge of data inter-relationships is essential.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (functions, linking) and familiarity with Word, Access, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.

Responsibilities

• Review procurements, budget transfers, and appropriating ordinances for correct account distribution, allowability, and funds availability.
• Perform general ledger file maintenance functions for assigned funds.
• Prepare budget and journal entries for assigned funds.
• Respond to inquiries from Borough employees for assigned funds.
• Prepare various reconciliations, allocations, reports, statements, spreadsheets and schedules, and perform special accounting projects for both internal and external purposes.
• Perform analyses of accounts in assigned funds, as needed.
• Reconcile and distribute transaction and ledger reports.
• Perform/assist with year-end accounting tasks, audit, and financial statement preparation.
• For various modules of the financial management system, troubleshoot and test periodic software updates; train and/or supervise staff in use of the system.
• Assist with records retention program for the General Ledger section.
