Job summary

County of Maui, Department of Management, seeks a skilled GIS professional to research, analyze, design and produce complex thematic maps and applications. You will assist in coordinating interdepartmental GIS matters and support the GIS database development.

The role involves supervising and training lower-level staff, performing data entry, and creating GIS programs and data formats. A degree plus three years of GIS experience is required.

Qualifications

• Requires education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in physical or natural science, geography, engineering, planning, computer science or related field.
• Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience using GIS software in design and production of thematic maps and other applications.

Responsibilities

• Manage the most difficult and complex data entry projects to produce custom thematic maps and reports using a GIS.
• Perform advanced analysis and interpretation of aerial photographs to delineate elevations, wetlands, vegetation, agricultural land, urban land and other geographic and land use characteristics.
• Design and produce custom thematic map data and reports requiring writing programs to produce unique and novel maps and reports.
• Write computer programs to format data and assist in developing the database for map production.
• Meet with user department representatives to develop and determine GIS needs.
• Research, analyze and design GIS projects and manage aerial photograph and remote sensing projects.
• Enter delineated map and descriptive information into GIS through digitizing, key entry or other standard map data entry procedures.
• Investigate and verify geographic and land use data by making physical inspections; participate in project planning and user committees.
