Job summary

Arup in New York seeks a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical design and delivery for infrastructure and building projects across the Americas East team. You will drive design analyses, ground interpretation, and construction-phase input for bridges, tunnels, waterfront, aviation, and data centers.

The role requires 8+ years of geotechnical experience, NYPE, and strong proficiency with Plaxis 2D/3D, OpenGround/gINT, and soil-structure interaction modelling.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Geological, Geotechnical or related engineering discipline; Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering preferred.
• 8+ years of relevant geotechnical engineering design experience, including demonstrated experience leading and checking technical design work.
• New York PE required, or ability to obtain New York PE within an agreed timeframe; NJ/MA licensure desirable.
• Strong technical experience in deep and shallow foundations, retaining walls, excavation, earthworks, slope stability, groundwater and underground structures.
• Familiarity with US codes and standards for infrastructure and building projects.
• Experience planning, procuring, supervising and interpreting subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs.
• Experience with digital workflows for geotechnical data processing and analysis (GIS/OpenGround/gINT).
• Experience with soil-structure interaction and numerical modelling (Plaxis 2D/3D or similar).
• Construction-phase experience including foundation installation and instrumentation review.
• Ability to mentor and guide junior engineers and communicate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Experience with rail/transit, bridges, tunnels, waterfront, aviation, utilities, datacenter or major redevelopment projects.
• Experience with NY/NJ public infrastructure clients preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver geotechnical design workstreams for infrastructure and building projects.
• Perform and review geotechnical analyses and design calculations for foundations, walls, excavation, and underground structures.
• Develop design parameters from subsurface data and testing results.
• Plan and interpret subsurface investigations and laboratory testing programs.
• Prepare and review calculation packages, reports, and construction documentation.
• Undertake soil-structure interaction analyses and numerical modelling.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate geotechnical recommendations.
• Support construction-phase services and review submittals/RFIs.
• Coordinate with subconsultants, drilling contractors, and field staff.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
• Support bids, proposals, and client relationship building.
• Present technical material to internal teams and clients.
