Job summary

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) seeks a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to lead geotechnical investigations and support a broad portfolio of highway, bridge, aviation, rail and water projects from our Easton-area Columbus office. The role involves subsurface exploration, analysis of soils and rock, and preparation of reports and construction documents for projects across Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering with a geotechnical concentration.
  • 5–10+ years geotechnical engineering experience including analysis, report writing, and proposal preparation.
  • Experience with geotechnical software such as gINT, SLIDE, SETTLE3, LPILE, ALLPILE, ReSSA; LRFD design experience.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams; strong problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee geotechnical investigations and manage project teams.
  • Develop and implement subsurface investigation programs (test borings, CPT, dilatometer, geophysical surveys).
  • Analyse soils and rock for design of foundations, slope stability, dewatering, and ground improvement.
  • Prepare geotechnical reports, memoranda and construction documents (plans, specs, cost estimates).
  • Respond to RFQ/RFPs and assist in business development for Ohio and Pennsylvania regions.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, and consultants; perform on-site inspections during construction.
  • Support marketing efforts for growth of geotechnical practice in the region.
  • Conduct field assignments including walking/climbing in challenging terrains.

Job description

Position Summary

JMT is currently seeking a full‑time Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our companywide geotechnical design practice. This position is based in our newly relocated and growing office in the Easton area of Columbus, OH. This position will support a variety of project types including many high‑profile projects across our company footprint in our highways, bridges, aviation, rail & transit, marine and ports, water and wastewater, dams and levees, and buildings and facilities markets. Some of our notable ongoing projects include Greendale Levee Greendale, IN; Long Bridge North in Washington DC/Northern Virginia; I‑95 Electronic Toll Lanes and the Harry W Nice/Thomas “Mac” Middelton Bridge Replacement both in Maryland and Alexandria Waterfront Design‑Build Improvements in Virginia. This position will also support highway and bridge projects throughout the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania for ODOT, PennDOT and other transportation clients.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for management and oversight of geotechnical investigations
  • Development and implementation of subsurface investigation programs consisting of test borings, cone penetrometer, dilatometer and geophysical surveys
  • Perform engineering analysis of soils and rock, for design of shallow and deep foundation systems, slope stability, excavations, permanent and temporary retaining systems, dewatering systems and soil improvement
  • Preparation of geotechnical reports and memoranda
  • Preparation of construction documents including plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Responsible for responses to requests for qualifications and proposal
  • Assist in marketing efforts for growth and development of the geotechnical engineering practice in the Ohio and Pennsylvania Region
  • Conduct and manage on‑site geotechnical inspection and engineering services during construction

Required Skills
  • BS degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in geotechnical courses
  • 5 to 10+ years geotechnical engineering experience including analysis, report writing, and proposal preparation required
  • Experience with geotechnical software similar to or including gINT, SLIDE, SETTLE3, LPILE, ALLPILE, ReSSA, etc., and LRFD design
  • Propensity and proficiency for problem solving, both in the office and in the field, and have successfully developed innovative solutions to various geotechnical challenges
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong writing/verbal skills in order to work with team members, clients, and contractors
  • Perform field assignments which include, but are not limited to, walking and climbing through areas that have steep slopes or other natural obstacles
  • Candidates must be capable of working on multiple projects in a dynamic, fast‑paced team‑oriented environment
  • Coordination with clients, contractors, outside consultants and firm staff is expected
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
Preferred Experience
  • MS degree in Geotechnical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer certification preferred.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation/CADD preferred.
  • Experience working on Federal, State, County and local projects including ODOT and PennDOT and Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission
Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment. Field work is required on occasion where work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 25 lbs) may be required as needed.
