Job summary

American Rivers seeks a General Counsel at the Vice President or Senior Vice President level to lead the legal function for a national conservation nonprofit. The role reports to the President & CEO and supports the Executive Leadership Team.

The GC will oversee a four-person legal department plus summer clerks, advise on employment, governance, tax, and regulatory matters, and collaborate closely with senior leadership on strategic initiatives and board engagement.

Qualifications

• J.D. with at least 15 years of successful legal practice.
• Bar admission and good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• Prior experience as a senior attorney, preferably including General Counsel experience, with staff management responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Lead the organization's legal function and manage the legal team across transactional, employment, tax, IP, lobbying, and governance matters.
• Advise the executive team and Board on governance, compliance, risk, and policy issues; serve as Assistant Secretary.
• Oversee outside counsel, cost management, and risk mitigation; ensure regulatory compliance across federal and state levels.
