Job summary

U.S.VETS is seeking an experienced General Counsel to serve as a trusted legal advisor to the President & CEO, Senior Leadership Team, HR, and Board of Directors. The role is hands-on, focusing on employment law, risk management, and strategic guidance for a mission-driven nonprofit.

The ideal candidate brings substantial in-house or corporate experience, strong negotiation skills, and the ability to translate complex legal issues into actionable guidance.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
• California Bar membership in good standing.
• 7+ years of practicing legal experience with strong employment law expertise.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the organization's primary legal advisor on employment and workplace matters, partnering with HR on employee relations, investigations, and policies.
• Advise senior leadership on legal risks, contracts, governance, compliance, and business transactions.
• Manage matters and potential claims; coordinate with outside counsel as needed.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts, leases, and other legal documents.
• Monitor regulatory changes and provide practical guidance to leadership.
• Advise on nonprofit governance and attend board/committee meetings as needed.
