Job summary

Gusto is seeking a Senior Full Stack Engineer on the HRX Engineering team to own features end-to-end across frontend, backend, and data layers. You will work in an agile pod with PMs and designers, writing maintainable code in Rails, React, TypeScript, and SQL.

You will design relational schemas, build RESTful or GraphQL APIs, and ensure reliability for hundreds of thousands of employers and employees. A hybrid NYC office schedule applies.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with demonstrated full-stack ownership.
• Experience designing, building, and shipping features spanning frontend, backend, and data layer with minimal oversight.
• Fluency in at least one modern backend framework (Ruby on Rails / Node.js / Python/Django).
• Fluency in at least one modern frontend framework (React / TypeScript).
• Solid grounding in relational databases (PostgreSQL / MySQL) including schema design, migrations, indexes, and query tuning.
• Strong knowledge of software design patterns, algorithms, testing (unit/integration/e2e), and CI/CD pipelines.
• Excellent written and verbal technical communication.

Responsibilities

• End-to-End Feature Ownership: design, build, test, ship, and monitor full-stack features with minimal supervision.
• Full-Stack Development: write clean, well-tested code across backend and frontend platforms.
• Database & API Design: design relational schemas, write efficient SQL, and build RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: partner with PMs and designers to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Operational Excellence & On-Call: participate in on-call rotation and monitor production health.
• Mentorship & Engineering Standards: conduct code reviews and establish testing standards.
