Job summary

Gusto is hiring a senior software engineer to own full-stack features from design through production, with light oversight. You will design, build, test, and monitor HRX engineering features, collaborating with product and design to deliver scalable solutions.

Expect to work across frontend, backend, and data layers with modern languages and frameworks. The role includes on-call duties and mentorship, contributing to a high-performance engineering culture in New York.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with full-stack work.
• Ability to design, build, and ship features across frontend, backend, and data layer with minimal oversight.
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language/framework and one modern frontend framework.
• Strong understanding of relational databases, schema design, migrations, and query performance.
• Comfortable owning a project end-to-end: scoping, design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring.
• Solid grounding in computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, testing, CI/CD.
• Experience partnering with product, design, and other engineers; clear written and verbal communication.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain features for the HRX Engineering surface.
• Write clean, well-tested code across the stack.
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, and retros.
• Partner with product and design to translate requirements into technical solutions.
• Help monitor and improve the reliability, performance, and quality of shipped features.
• Participate in on-call rotation and lead incident response for owned systems.
• Provide technical guidance and code-review mentorship to junior engineers.
