Job summary

Ad Hoc LLC is seeking a Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack (Java) for a remote role within the United States. This position focuses on building scalable government digital services with modern frontend and Java-based backend systems.

The role emphasizes leadership, collaboration with stakeholders, and mentoring engineers, while delivering high-quality software across front-end and back-end domains. The team works on federal civilian programs and modernizes legacy systems.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Demonstrated expert-level knowledge in at least one technical discipline (front-end, back-end, full-stack, or infrastructure).
• Experience designing, developing, testing, and maintaining production software applications.
• Experience troubleshooting complex technical issues and contributing to scalable, maintainable software solutions.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience providing technical guidance, mentorship, or peer support to other engineers.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate technical expertise, accountability, and ownership of contributions to the application codebase.
• Maintain a strong understanding of adjacent technical areas, systems, and ecosystems to effectively coordinate integrations and dependencies.
• Design, develop, test, maintain, and improve high-quality software solutions across front-end and/or back-end systems.
• Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues within owned systems, using incidents and lessons learned to identify opportunities for system and process improvements.
• Mentor and support junior and mid-level engineers in developing their technical and problem-solving skills.
• Clearly communicate technical concepts, issues, risks, and developments to team members, clients, and stakeholders.
• Participate in technical interviews and help evaluate engineering candidates.
• Use strong technical judgment and influencing skills to propose, evaluate, and recommend approaches to technical and process challenges.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineers within the team.
• Lead small projects, technical initiatives, or temporary team structures as needed.
• Develop and present design documents, system diagrams, technical recommendations, and other engineering artifacts to clients, stakeholders, partners, and fellow engineers.
