Job summary

Highmark Health in Washington, DC area is seeking an experienced software engineer to join an agile team building scalable applications across digital channels. You’ll shape architectural decisions and drive end-to-end development using React on the frontend and Python with PostgreSQL/BigQuery on the backend, contributing to GraphQL and REST APIs.

You will participate in CI/CD with GitLab, mentor junior engineers, and help advance enterprise healthcare software practices in a dynamic environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related field.
• 5 years experience in design/analysis of algorithms and scalable systems.
• 5 years in at least one modern language (Java, Python, JavaScript, etc.) and two of: React, Angular, NodeJS, NoSQL, HTML5/CSS, cloud platforms.
• 5 years of REST, HTTPS, JSON experience.
• 5 years in defining system architectures and trade-offs for short-term and long-term capabilities.
• 7 years of healthcare tech experience (preferred).
• Proven expertise in full-stack development with React frontend and Python backend (PostgreSQL/BigQuery).
• Strong CI/CD and cloud deployment experience with GitLab CI/CD.

Responsibilities

• Design and create engineering specs and code adhering to standards.
• Generate ideas, implement technical solutions, and ensure scalability and performance.
• Participate in agile ceremonies, sprint planning, and complete sprints end-to-end.
• Drive story creation with DoD, acceptance criteria, estimation; manage tasks.
• Monitor production progress and report issues to lead developers regularly.
• Mentor other engineers as needed and support career development.
• Perform other duties as assigned or requested.
