Job summary

Muon Space is seeking a Senior FPGA Engineer specializing in onboard networking, cryptography and security to design the network fabric and security architecture of our next-generation spacecraft. This is a hands-on role blending architectural work with RTL coding, collaborating with the HPC team to bring secure data movement from sensors to downlink.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, plus 5+ years of professional FPGA engineering experience.
• Hands-on experience with Ethernet, link aggregation, and high-speed signal integrity considerations.

Responsibilities

• Define onboard networking architecture for switching, routing, filtering, firewalling, DPI, and VPN concepts.
• Implement end-to-end encryption and router-level, file-based encryption for onboard and downlink data.
• Drive definition of onboard Ethernet switching/routing device and evaluate options (COTS, semi-custom, FPGA-based).
• Design and build a spacecraft NoC and robust FPGA-to-FPGA links with health monitoring.
• Own Ethernet PHY/MAC integration on FPGAs and investigate link aggregation and SI trade-offs.
• Apply FEC schemes (e.g., Reed-Solomon) to onboard/inter-FPGA links; translate requirements into RTL.
• Integrate network fabric with customer payloads ensuring interoperability and validation.
• Publish white papers and represent work internally/externally as appropriate.
• Collaborate with Staff Onboard Compute Architect to harmonize networking and security with compute architecture.
