Job summary

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is seeking a Principal FPGA Design Engineer to support the Common Products Circuit Design organization in Rancho Bernardo, CA. You will design, implement, and verify HDL for FPGA-based avionics computer functions, collaborating with product architects, electrical designers, software and systems engineers.

Responsibilities include defining FPGA architecture, translating requirements to FPGA designs, and developing test benches, with synthesis and timing

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline with 5 years of related engineering experience; OR Master’s degree with 3 years; OR PhD with 1 year.
• Digital circuit design experience, including simulation & schematic capture through test and integration.
• Hands-on prototyping and debug with FPGAs, embedded processors, and high‑speed interfaces.
• Experience with AMD FPGAs and the Vivado tool (or equivalent).
• Experience with OVM/UVM Verification methodologies.
• Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Secret Clearance.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Program Access.

Responsibilities

• Define FPGA architecture and logic design to support avionics computer functions.
• Translate system and board-level requirements to FPGA requirements and design specs.
• Partition system functionality between hardware, firmware and software.
• Develop synthesizable HDL code for FPGA-based designs.
• Implement interfaces such as PCIe, SPI, I2C, UART, Ethernet and Serial.
• Create test benches and verification environment for FPGA functionality.
• Perform functional, timing and synthesis-level simulations for reliable operation.
• Support hardware-in-the-loop and system integration testing with embedded processors and avionics.
• Participate in formal verification and validation activities.
• Perform synthesis, place & route and timing closure using Vivado.
• Provide documentation and support on findings.
