Job summary

Salas O’Brien, Inc. seeks a seasoned Forensic Structural Engineer III in the Detroit, MI area for a remote/home-office role. You will investigate and evaluate the cause and extent of structural damage from storms, disasters, fires, defects, and accidents.

You’ll work independently, write strong reports, and communicate with clients and internal teams while traveling as needed. PE license in MI or reciprocity is preferred.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of forensic engineering experience required; 5–10 years preferred.
• Ability to work independently and with a cross-functional team.
• Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills required.
• Must provide excellent customer service to clients.
• Proficiency with basic tech (computers, phones, cameras).
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in Michigan or reciprocity preferred.

Responsibilities

• Conduct site inspections to determine cause, origin, and extent of structural damage.
• Develop clear, well-supported conclusions and high-quality technical reports.
• Provide timely, professional updates to clients and stakeholders; manage expectations.
• Work independently from a home office while leveraging internal experts.
• Drive issues to resolution with stakeholders and ensure standards are met.
• Contribute ideas to strengthen processes and tools.
