Job summary

Salas O’Brien, Inc. seeks a Forensic Structural Engineer III in the Detroit, MI area for a remote/home-office role. You will investigate and evaluate the cause and extent of structural damage from storms, disasters, fires, defects, and more, with clear, defensible technical reports.

Requires Michigan PE license or reciprocity, 2+ years of forensic experience (5–10 preferred), and strong technical writing and verbal communication skills. Travel for fieldwork may be required.

Qualifications

• 2+ years of forensic engineering experience required.
• Must be able to work independently and with a cross-functional team.
• Strong technical writing skills are required; effective reports are critical.
• Strong verbal communication skills are necessary; effective in face-to-face interactions.
• You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.

Responsibilities

• Forensic investigations: conduct site inspections and determine cause, origin and extent of damage.
• Analysis & reporting: develop clear, well-supported conclusions and high-quality reports.
• Client communication: provide timely, professional updates to clients and stakeholders.
• Collaboration & independence: work from a home office while leveraging internal resources.
• Project ownership: drive issues to resolution meeting standards and expectations.
