Rocket Lab USA in Long Beach, CA is seeking a Principal Flight Software Engineer to lead the development of flight software for Space Systems programs. You will design, implement, and test software that may run on orbit within weeks, interfacing with sensors and actuators and collaborating across engineering teams.

The role requires 12+ years of embedded experience and proficiency in Rust, C++, and C, with RTOS or Embedded Linux. Security clearance or eligibility and US citizenship are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering (software, computer, electrical, aerospace, or related field).
• 12+ years of embedded software development experience.
• Proficiency in Rust, C++, and C languages.
• Experience with RTOS or Embedded Linux.
• Experience leading junior software developers and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
• Active security clearance or ability to obtain one; US citizenship required.

Responsibilities

• Develop application software to run on RTOS and/or embedded Linux.
• Develop hardware drivers for IMUs, star trackers, reaction wheels, and sensors.
• Create and maintain unit tests within a CI framework.
• Collaborate with test engineers to verify hardware/software integration.
• Work with systems and embedded engineers to define and validate requirements.
• Review code changes and uphold coding standards.
• Participate in design reviews (PDR/CDR) and on-orbit operations.
• Assist with on-orbit and interplanetary flight operations.
