Job summary

The State of South Carolina seeks a manager for the Cheraw Fish Hatchery to oversee all culture and harvest activities, ensure production goals are met, and supervise staff and facilities. The role requires coordinating resources, maintaining records, and providing outreach support for fisheries programs.

You will work on-site, live in a provided residence, and be on-call around the clock, contributing to the state's fishery management objectives and public outreach efforts.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management with two years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management/research; or a Bachelor's degree with four years of experience in those areas.
  • Knowledge of warmwater fish culture techniques and nutrition; genetics and brood-stock enhancement; disease identification and treatment; data collection and management; budgeting; and supervisory methods.

Responsibilities

  • Regulating and supervising all activities related to culture and harvest of fish at the Cheraw Fish Hatchery.
  • Implementing and carrying out duties to meet annual production goals as assigned by the Hatchery Coordinator.
  • Coordinating manpower and equipment for pond stocking, management, harvest, transportation and stocking of hatchery products to public waters.
  • Supervising maintenance of grounds, ponds, office, work buildings, and residence to ensure maximum service.
  • Being on-call 24 hours/day.
  • Administration of department records, fish production reports, feed usage reports, annual report, requisitions, FPRs, procurement cards, staff leave reports, and hatchery information for public use.
  • Supervising hatchery employees daily; assisting with maintenance and construction activities on state lakes projects and coordinating outreach events.
