Responsibilities

  • Organize activities and coordinate with the Hatchery Manager.
  • Assist in all phases of hatchery activities.
  • Monitor and evaluate hatchery operations.
  • Monitor and correct protocols for rearing, harvesting, and distribution of fish.
  • Assist Hatchery Manager in planning/maintenance of buildings and grounds.
  • Maintain hatchery grounds, culture-rearing systems, ponds, tanks, raceways and buildings.
  • Assist in planning research to improve production or stocking efficiency and new culture techniques.
  • Maintain department records, production reports, feed usage records, annual report, requisitions, and staff time/leave reports.
  • Perform maintenance on equipment and vehicles.

Assistant Hatchery Manager

This employee will serve as Assistant Hatchery Manager of the Cheraw Fish Hatchery.

Overview

Job Duties Include

  • Organizing activities and coordinating with the Hatchery Manager for any changes and scheduling them into the daily work loads for technicians and temporary labor.
  • Coordinating to ensure employees know what tasks need to be completed.
  • Assisting in all phases of hatchery activities including daily husbandry, stocking, fertilization, feeding, water quality monitoring, harvesting, inventory, and distribution.
  • Monitoring, evaluating and if necessary, taking corrective measure to ensure that proper protocol for rearing, harvesting and distribution of fish is allowed.
  • Assisting the Hatchery Manager in administering building and grounds maintenance.
  • Performing all duties necessary to ensure that hatchery grounds, culture-rearing systems, ponds, tanks. raceways and buildings are neatly maintained and functioning correctly.
  • Assisting the Hatchery Manager in planning and implementing research activities at Cheraw to improve production or stocking efficiency of designated fish species, or to develop culture techniques of new species.
  • Assisting the Hatchery Manager with the administration of department records, fish production reports, feed usage records, annual report, requisitions, procurement cards staff time/leave reports, and development of hatchery information for public use.
  • Maintaining department-issued equipment, including preventative and necessary maintenance on assigned vehicle.
Minimum And Additional Requirements
  • A master's degree in biology, chemistry or related technical area field; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and two (2) years of experience relevant to the job.
  • Standard (Core) and Aquatic (Category 5) Pesticide Applicator's License within twelve (12) months of hire date. Willing and able to acquire first aid and CPR training.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with black bass culture and/or warm water aquaculture and fish husbandry. Ability to collect, enter, manage, and analyze data reliably; provide input and technical expertise related to culture decisions; and design and implement research aimed at improving hatchery production. Familiarity with equipment, building, and grounds maintenance; ability to oversee maintenance schedules. Ability to work independently in the field and adverse weather; safely operate small boats; operate trucks, trailers, and landscaping equipment; and perform some heavy physical labor. Familiarity with aquatic resource sampling tools (nets, electrofishing gear, water quality meters and test kits). Knowledge of supervisory methods and techniques. Willing to live on-site and in SCDNR-provided residence.
