Job summary

WD in Irvine is seeking a Senior Manager, Firmware Development to lead a team of firmware engineers responsible for embedded firmware in our storage products. You will drive architecture, development, integration, debugging, and on-time delivery while aligning with product and business goals.

You will mentor engineers, manage performance, set priorities, and collaborate with ASIC, hardware, systems, validation, and manufacturing teams to deliver robust firmware solutions across the product

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.
10+ years of embedded or firmware development experience with leadership roles.
3+ years of people management or equivalent leadership experience.
Strong embedded systems background with C/C++ and hardware/software integration.
Experience leading full product development cycles from concept to release.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for engineering and management audiences.

Responsibilities

Lead, develop, and retain a team of firmware engineers across architecture, design, implementation, integration, debugging, and sustaining activities.
Set goals, priorities, and execution plans aligned with product roadmaps, schedules, and quality expectations.
Drive firmware development using disciplined practices: design reviews, coding standards, defect management, test strategy, and release readiness.
Provide technical and organizational leadership for embedded firmware including data structures, drivers, and hardware interfaces.
Guide debugging across firmware, hardware, system, and platform interactions; support root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Partner with ASIC, hardware, systems, validation, manufacturing, reliability, and program teams to deliver complete solutions.
Balance near-term delivery with longer-term improvements in team capability, processes, tools, and roadmap.
Review designs, development plans, and analyses to ensure clear tradeoffs and risk management.
Foster a high-accountability, collaborative environment that supports growth in technical depth and ownership.
Manage resource planning, hiring, onboarding, and succession for the firmware organization.
Communicate status, risks, and key decisions to Director of Firmware Development and stakeholders.
Ensure comprehensive documentation across requirements, design artifacts, investigations, and release materials.
