Job summary

WD is seeking a Manager of Firmware Development in Rochester, MN to lead a team of firmware engineers delivering embedded software for storage products. You will drive execution, design reviews, and cross-functional collaboration with ASIC, hardware, and validation teams across the full product lifecycle.

The role demands strong C/C++ expertise, 7+ years in embedded/firmware, and 1+ year of people management.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
7+ years of embedded or firmware development with leadership experience.
1+ years of people management including performance coaching.
Strong C/C++ firmware experience with drivers and hardware interfaces.
Experience leading full product development cycles from concept to release.
Proven ability to manage engineers with varied experience.
Strong problem-solving and root-cause analysis in complex systems.
Excellent written and verbal communication for engineering and management audiences.

Responsibilities

Lead, develop, and retain a team of firmware engineers across architecture, design, implementation, integration, debugging, and sustaining activities.
Set goals and execution plans aligned with product roadmaps and quality expectations.
Drive firmware development with disciplined engineering practices, design reviews, and release readiness.
Provide technical and organizational leadership for embedded firmware including data structures, drivers, and hardware interfaces.
Guide debugging across firmware, hardware, system, and platform interactions; support root-cause analysis.
Partner with ASIC, hardware, validation, manufacturing, and program teams to deliver complete solutions.
Balance near-term execution with longer-term improvements in team capability and processes.
Review designs and plans to ensure sound decisions and risk management.
Establish a high-accountability, collaborative environment for growth and ownership.
